PERSONAL WORK

Personal Work ▸ Selections from I Wish You Where Here (2013)
Published by Anchorless Press (Toronto, ON), this photobook explores the connections not quite made while I was living in the Netherlands for five months, existing somewhere between a tourist and resident, neither one totally.

This project has been featured in recent juried exhibitions at Phoenix Art MuseumContemporary Arts Center New Orleans, and Vivid Solutions Gallery (Washington, DC). It was featured in Fraction Magazine, and I’ve presented it in lectures at the George Eastman House (Rochester, NY) and the Society for Photographic Education 2013 Midwest Regional Conference.

Personal Work ▸ Selections from Sparked As He Grazed It (2014)
These images relate the experience of traveling through the American Southwest: breathtaking landscapes clash with gaudy tourist traps, while reminders of a tumultuous natural and cultural history hide in plain sight. This work debuted at Ohio State University’s Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery in October 2014, and will be published by Anchorless Press (Toronto, ON) in 2015.

Personal Work ▸ Ansel Adams | New Landscapes (2006)
As digital technologies continue Adams’s tradition of precise control over photographic materials, I’m led to ask how technology impacts the creation and interpretation of images. Published by Visual Studies Workshop Press (Rochester, NY), this book has been acquired by several museum and art libraries, including the Library of Congress Division of Prints and Photographs and the University of the Arts (Philadelphia, PA).

STUDENT WORK

Student Work ▸ Course: Photography History and Appreciation ▸ Evanston Art Center
This student was inspired by a class that explored photography’s long tradition of experimental self-portraits, including using dolls or other objects as a substitute for the self. Based largely on work from this series, this student was recently admitted to the Maine Media Workshop MFA program.

Student Work ▸ Course: Introduction to Black and White Photography ▸ SUNY-Brockport
A selection of work, including the results of assignments in self-portraiture, combination printing, and the photography of everyday objects.

Student Work ▸ Course: Introduction to Digital Photography ▸ Evanston Art Center
A selection of work, including the results of assignments in photographing one’s own home, looking for geometry, and the tension between the built and natural landscape.

Student Work ▸ Course: Media Theory & Criticism ▸ Loyola University Chicago
Note: Please click to enlarge and experience; these are animated GIF files that may take a moment to load. After studying overlapping theories of still and moving media, this student created these animated GIFs that look like still photos yet feature movement in one part of the image. He has since gone on to become an Associate Producer at Leo Burnett and has recently started his own production company.
